EDITINGIn the editing process, as a former writing instructor, I help clients gain the knowledge and skills they can apply to future projects.
Services include developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading. Editing tends to fall into one of two buckets –
Developmental editing is big picture editing. It helps you when you need development of your work. It looks overall at your project – structure, logical flow, tone, the development of characters and settings, and your argument, if it’s a non-fiction work. The editor identifies large-scale strategies to improve the manuscript. In developmental editing the editor carefully looks at the work and notes in the report to the writer comments and questions and opportunities for revision and improvement. Copyediting is the editing stage applied when the structure of the piece is there, the work flows and has verve and voice, but it needs an edit that makes the air move through it. It's editing after big picture issues have been addressed. Line editing is a close version of copyediting and looks sentence by sentence for flow and clarity and consistency and brightness of copy. Line editing has a main focus on improving the language, pace and style of the text; it looks out for clunky language and creates variety in your writing. Copyediting looks for correct usage, and transitions between paragraphs. The copy editor works in a broad and impartial manner correcting syntax, spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation. Proofreading is for a work that has already been professionally edited. It is a last stage to a manuscript that looks for errors and typos, and makes sure changes have been made from earlier editing stages.
